If you grew up with an electric curtain track gliding silently across the bay window, there's a good chance it was a Swish. For decades, Swish was the go-to British brand for electric curtain tracks, and their Autoglide was the product that put motorised curtains into thousands of homes. Then in 2007, Silent Gliss acquired the Autoglide name from Swish, and everything changed.

This article is specifically about that transition: what Silent Gliss inherited, how the product evolved, and what it means practically if you have an old Swish track or you're moving from an older Autoglide model to the current Silent Gliss Autoglide 5100.

What Silent Gliss Bought from Swish

Silent Gliss acquired the Autoglide brand name and the concept, not a finished product they could sell as-is. Swish had built a reputation on a simple, functional electric track that did what it said. It wasn't fancy, but it worked, and people trusted it.

What Silent Gliss brought to the table was engineering depth. They're a Swiss-founded company with a long history in high-end curtain track systems, and when they took over the Autoglide name they essentially started again with better materials, better motors, and a better understanding of what installers and end users actually needed. The first Silent Gliss versions carried the 5070 and 5080 model numbers, then the 5090, and now the current 5100.

What Actually Changed Between Swish and the 5100

The differences between the original Swish Autoglide and the current 5100 are significant enough that they shouldn't really be thought of as the same product with a new name. Here's what changed:

  • The motor: The original Swish motor was adequate for its time but noisy by today's standards. The 5100 uses a DC motor with near-silent operation. Customers regularly describe it as barely audible from the next room.
  • Reliability: The old Swish tracks had a reasonable lifespan, but motor failures and carrier issues were common once they aged. The 5100 is substantially more robust, with a longer warranty reflecting this.
  • Bay window compatibility: The original Swish struggled with bay windows. The 5100 bends to follow the angle of bay and bow windows cleanly, which opens it up to a much wider range of installations.
  • Control options: The Swish system was basic. The 5100 supports remote controls, wall switches, timers, and smart home integration depending on configuration.
  • Glider design: The carriers that hooks attach to were redesigned. The 5100 gliders run more smoothly and are better suited to heavier curtains.

Parts Are Not Compatible

This is the thing that catches people out most often. If you have an original Swish Autoglide and something breaks, you cannot use Silent Gliss 5100 parts to fix it. The motors are different, the gliders are different, and the track profiles are different. Swish parts themselves dried up years ago, so if a component fails on an original Swish track, the practical answer is a full replacement rather than a repair.

The same applies between older Silent Gliss Autoglide generations. Parts from the 5090 are not interchangeable with the 5100 in most cases. If you're looking for a specific component, contact us and we can confirm whether it exists and fits your model before you order anything.

When an Upgrade Makes Sense

If your Swish Autoglide is still running, there's no urgent reason to replace it. These tracks were well made and some genuinely are still operating after 20 or more years. But when the motor goes, or a carrier cracks, or the track itself warps, repair usually isn't an option. That's when an upgrade to the 5100 makes sense.

The 5100 is made to measure, so it fits the same window. Installation isn't complex but does involve wiring and correctly setting the end stops, so most customers prefer a professional fit. We can supply the track cut to length and advise on installation, or point you towards an installer if needed.

If you're not sure whether your existing track is repairable or whether a full replacement is the better call, get in touch and describe what you've got. We've dealt with enough of these scenarios to give you a straight answer.

What the 5100 Offers That the Swish Never Could

Beyond the obvious reliability improvements, the 5100 opens up options that simply weren't available with the original Swish. Smart home integration means the track can be controlled via voice or app. Timer functions mean curtains open and close on schedule without anyone touching a remote. And because Silent Gliss has an extensive accessories range, the system can be adapted and expanded in ways the old Swish system never supported.

If you're coming to electric curtain tracks for the first time, the 5100 is the benchmark product in this category. If you're upgrading from an old Swish, the difference in operation is noticeable from the first use.

Take a look at the Silent Gliss Autoglide 5100 or get in touch if you want to talk through your specific situation. We're happy to advise on sizing, configuration, and whether your existing setup can be adapted or needs a fresh start.
