Silent Gliss vs Somfy: Which Electric Curtain Track is Right for You?
Two strong options, different strengths
Silent Gliss and Somfy are the two names that come up most often when people look at electric curtain tracks. Both make good products. They suit different situations. This article sets out the honest differences so you can decide which makes more sense for your home.
One thing to be upfront about: we sell Silent Gliss, not Somfy. That means we have a commercial interest in you choosing Silent Gliss. We've tried to write this fairly anyway, because a recommendation that doesn't acknowledge the competition isn't worth much.
About the two companies
Somfy is a French company founded in 1969. It's a large, global business with motorisation at its core: shutters, awnings, blinds, garage doors and curtain tracks all sit under the same roof. Its TaHoma smart home hub ties all of those products together. Somfy has a wide installer network and its products are stocked by a large number of retailers across the UK.
Silent Gliss is a Swiss brand with a narrower focus: curtain tracks and blinds. It doesn't have the scale of Somfy, but that focus shows in the product. The Autoglide range is designed specifically for curtain tracks, and the engineering reflects that.
The main products compared
For like-for-like comparison, the relevant products are the Silent Gliss Autoglide 5100 and the Somfy Glydea. Both are ceiling or wall-mounted electric curtain tracks, both work with a remote, and both can be integrated into a wider smart home setup.
| Feature | Silent Gliss Autoglide 5100 | Somfy Glydea |
|---|---|---|
| Motor noise | Very quiet | Audible hum |
| Bay window bending | Excellent, bends to tight angles | Limited flexibility |
| Smart home integration | Limited without upgrading to 5600+Move | Full TaHoma ecosystem |
| Availability | Specialist suppliers | Widely stocked |
| Entry price | Higher | Lower |
| Build quality / longevity | Excellent | Good |
| Wave heading compatibility | Yes | No |
| DIY installation | Possible but not straightforward | More DIY-friendly |
Where Silent Gliss is stronger
- Noise. The name isn't a marketing gimmick. The Autoglide motor is genuinely quieter than the Somfy Glydea. In a bedroom, that matters.
- Bay windows. The Silent Gliss track bends to tighter angles, which makes it the better choice for bay windows without breaks or joins in the track.
- Wave heading. If you want ripple-fold curtains (the clean, uniform wave effect), Silent Gliss supports that with the correct gliders. Somfy's Glydea doesn't offer this.
- Long-term quality. The glider mechanism is smoother and more durable over years of daily use. It's a track built for the long run.
Where Somfy is stronger
- Smart home ecosystem. If you're already using Somfy products, or planning to motorise shutters, blinds and curtains together, TaHoma is a genuinely good hub. Silent Gliss doesn't have an equivalent out of the box. The Silent Gliss 5600+Move adds smart connectivity, but it's an additional cost.
- Availability and installers. More retailers stock Somfy. More local installers know the product. If you need servicing in a rural area, that can matter.
- Entry price. The Glydea costs less at the bottom of the range. If budget is the primary concern and you don't need bay window bending or Wave heading, Somfy gets the job done.
- DIY installation. Somfy's products tend to be more approachable for a confident DIYer. Silent Gliss is better with a specialist installer.
Which one should you choose?
If you want the best electric curtain track, judged purely on the track itself, Silent Gliss comes out ahead. The motor is quieter, the mechanism is smoother, and it handles bay windows and Wave headings better than anything Somfy offers at the equivalent price point.
If you're building a whole-home automation setup and curtains are one part of a broader Somfy installation (shutters, blinds, garage), it makes sense to stay within that ecosystem. TaHoma is a mature platform and the integration works well.
For most people buying an electric curtain track for a living room or bedroom, without an existing Somfy setup, Silent Gliss is the right choice.
