Electric curtains explained

Electric curtains open and close at the touch of a button, or on a timer so they move with the sunrise. Every system we stock is Silent Gliss, the Swiss manufacturer trusted by five-star hotels and interior designers worldwide. Buy electric curtains direct from us at up to 35% below RRP, with free UK mainland delivery and real people on the phone to help you choose.

The Autoglide 5100 is by far the most popular choice for homes: it plugs into a standard socket, needs no electrician, and handles curtains up to 30 kg on a track up to 9 metres long. For heavier or commercial curtains, the Silent Gliss 5600 supports up to 65 kg across spans of 25 metres, ideal for large windows, stage curtains, or room dividers. If you'd rather have a visible pole than a concealed track, the Metropole is the only electric curtain pole on the market, available in 30 mm or 50 mm diameter with a choice of decorative finials.

Not sure which motorised curtain track suits your windows? Use the comparison table below or give us a call and we'll talk you through the options in plain English.

Automatic curtains

If you call them automatic curtains, motorised curtains, or electric curtains, you mean the same thing: curtains that open and close on their own at the press of a button. All our systems are Silent Gliss, and the Autoglide 5100 is the model most people land on because it plugs into a standard socket and needs no electrician. Set it on a timer and your automatic curtains open at sunrise and close at sunset without you lifting a finger, which is the single feature most of our customers tell us they wouldn't go back on once they have it.

Motorised curtain tracks

Installers, architects and interior designers tend to call these motorised curtain tracks rather than electric curtains, and it's the right term when you're specifying for hotels, large homes, offices or theatres. The Silent Gliss 5600 is the workhorse in that category, with a 65 kg weight capacity and spans up to 25 metres. It handles stage curtains, room dividers and floor-to-ceiling glazing without strain, and it connects to home automation systems via the Move 4.0 Server so a commercial specifier can drop it into a smart building brief without a workaround.

Auto curtain track / automatic curtain track

Shopping for an auto curtain track or an automatic curtain track usually means you want the simplest possible install. Plug it in, hang the curtains, press a button. That's exactly what the Autoglide 5100 is built for: a 5 metre cable with a fitted UK plug, a wireless wall switch included, and straightforward DIY fitting with the brackets in the box. Most of our customers have theirs on the wall and running in under an hour, with no drilling into mains circuits and no electrician to book.

Electric curtain openers, remotes and app control

Every Silent Gliss system ships with a wireless controller, and the full range of openers covers almost any setup. The 5100 B comes with a wireless wall switch, the 5100 R adds a handheld remote, the 5100 T adds a programmable timer, and the 5100 TC bundles all three. For multi-track installations we also supply the Silent Gliss 6-channel remote so you can run six tracks independently from a single handset. If you want voice or app control, the 5600 pairs with the Move 4.0 Server and integrates with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit via your existing home automation hub. The 5100 doesn't connect to WiFi directly, so if app control is a must, the 5600 is the track to look at.

Electric Curtain Buying Guide

Everything you need to know before buying an electric curtain, from measuring to choosing the right model. Click any item below to jump to that section.

How to choose between the 5100, 5600 and Metropole

Most UK customers pick the Autoglide 5100. It plugs into a standard socket, supports curtains up to 30 kg on a track up to 9 metres long, bends for bay windows, and fits into a standard ceiling recess. DIY install, no electrician. That covers the majority of domestic rooms.

Go up to the Silent Gliss 5600 if your curtains are heavier than 30 kg, your span is longer than 9 metres, your bay has more than two bends, or you need smart home integration (Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit, KNX, Control4). The 5600 needs an electrician for mains hardwiring.

Choose the Metropole if you want the pole itself to be a visible design feature rather than hidden above the curtains. Manual or electric, 30 mm or 50 mm diameter, 9 colours and 9 finials.

Measuring your window

Inside a recess: measure wall-to-wall and subtract 1 cm. A 245 cm recess means a 244 cm track. The motor sits within the track length so you don't need extra space for it.

Outside a recess (face-fixed above the window): add 15 to 20 cm either side of the window frame so the curtains stack clear of the glass when fully open. Enter the exact length you want.

Bay window: measure each facet wall-to-wall, the interior angle at each bend, and the projection. Tick the bending option on the 5100 order page and we'll walk you through the numbers before we build the track.

Installation: DIY vs professional

The Autoglide 5100 is a DIY fit. Mount the brackets, clip the track in, plug it into a standard socket. Most people have it up in under an hour. A handyman can fit it in the same time if you'd rather not do it yourself.

The 5600 and electric Metropole (50 mm) need hardwiring by a qualified electrician. If you don't have someone lined up, give us a call and we'll recommend an installer in your area.

Power and smart home options

The 5100 comes with a 5 metre cable and fitted UK mains plug. Run the cable behind the curtain stack to the nearest socket. Control via the included wireless wall switch, handheld remote (R/TC), or programmable timer (T/TC).

For voice or app control, the 5600 integrates with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit via the Move 4.0 Server accessory. The 5100 doesn't connect to WiFi directly, so if smart home is a must, the 5600 is the track to look at.

What comes with your order

Every kit includes the track, motor, fixing brackets, your chosen controllers, 5 metre power cable with fitted UK plug (5100 and electric Metropole only), and full fitting instructions. Standard curtain hooks fit the gliders, so you can use your existing curtains or any new curtains you buy. You'll need standard rawl plugs and screws for your wall type (hardware shop stuff), and that's it.

FAQ: the 10 most common questions

Are your tracks 100% authentic Silent Gliss?
Yes. Manufactured by Silent Gliss directly and sent straight to your door. We don't assemble or rebrand anyone else's tracks.
Can the 5100 be bent for a bay window?
Yes. Up to twice per track to a minimum radius of 250 mm. Tick the bending option and we'll go through the measurements with you.
Do I need an electrician for the 5100?
No. It has a fitted UK mains plug, so you plug it in like any other appliance. The 5600 is the only model in our range that needs hardwiring.
What curtain weight can these tracks support?
Autoglide 5100: 30 kg straight, 15 kg bent. Silent Gliss 5600: 65 kg on a 10 metre straight track. Electric Metropole: 25 kg.
How long does delivery take?
5 to 7 working days for tracks made to your measurements. Up to 20 working days if you order Wave curtains with the track, as they ship together.
Can the tracks be operated manually in a power cut?
Yes. The 5100 can be overridden by hand. The 5600 can be overridden up to 12 metres in length.
Can I control multiple tracks from one remote?
Yes. Set multiple tracks to the same channel and one controller runs them all together. The Silent Gliss 6-channel remote runs up to six tracks independently from one handset.
What colours are available?
5100: white or black. 5600: white or silver/grey. Metropole: 9 colours including Black, White, Matt White, Ecru, Slate Grey, Bronze, Antique Bronze, Taupe, and Anodic Grey.
Is the track length inclusive of the motor?
Yes. The motor hangs down behind the track, so the track length is the track length. Enter the full measurement you want. Take off 1 cm if fitting inside a recess.
How much does delivery cost?
Free to UK mainland addresses. The price on the website is the price you pay.

What is an electric curtain track?
An electric curtain track, also called a motorised curtain track or automatic curtain rail, uses a built-in motor to open and close your curtains. You control it with a remote, wall switch, timer, or smart home system. All our tracks are made to measure by Silent Gliss in Switzerland and come with comprehensive fitting instructions. Whether you are upgrading from a manual track or fitting motorised curtains for the first time, the process is straightforward.
How are motorised curtain tracks different to manual tracks?
A motorised curtain track replaces the effort of pulling curtains by hand with quiet, smooth automation. The main advantages over a manual curtain rail are convenience (open from bed or the sofa), consistency (curtains glide evenly every time), and programmability (set a timer so curtains open with the sunrise). For heavy or wide curtains, a motorised track also reduces wear on the fabric because the motor distributes force evenly along the full length of the track.
How do I control an electric curtain?
Every Silent Gliss Autoglide 5100 ships with a wireless wall switch. The R model adds a handheld remote, the T model adds a programmable timer, and the TC model bundles all three. For multi-track setups, the Silent Gliss 6-channel remote runs up to six tracks independently from one handset. App and voice control via Alexa, Google Home or Apple HomeKit is available on the 5600 through the Move 4.0 Server accessory.
Can electric curtains fit a bay window?
Yes. Through our many years of selling Autoglides, we have developed a sure-fire way of getting the bends for bay windows absolutely perfect based on a few simple measurements. Silent Gliss Autoglide 5100 tracks can have a maximum of two bends up to ninety degrees or one continuous curve. The 5600 can be bent any number of times for more complex shapes.
Can I install an electric curtain track myself?
The Autoglide 5100 is designed for DIY installation. It comes with a fitted UK mains plug so there is no wiring involved, and most people have it up in under an hour. The 5600 and electric Metropole models require hardwiring by a qualified electrician. We can recommend installers in your area if needed.
